Zainab’s Dream
Konima’s “Growing” Business
Today this 12-year-old is back in her desk full-time at the school she attends in Moyamba District in southern Sierra Leone. In the past, Zainab’s attendance was spotty because her mother couldn’t afford to provide her with a lunch. Now the grade six student receives a meal through the school meals program. “I almost dropped out because of hunger,” she shares. Now Zainab can focus on her goal of becoming a nurse.
Konima used to travel long distances between villages to sell the produce from her farm. Today, the mother of six supplies the school’s meals program. Her farming business is growing, and she has a more reliable income to support her family and to cover the costs of her children’s schooling. “Without the school meals program, my family and I couldn’t survive,” she say. “I’m so happy now.”
