FUNDING PROPOSAL: SCHOOL FEEDING IN SIERRA LEONE

For children, food insecurity is particularly devastating. Not having enough healthy food can have serious implications for a child’s physical and mental health, academic achievement and future economic prosperity. Research shows a link between food insecurity and delayed development in young children – as well as a risk of chronic illnesses like asthma and anemia, and behavioural problems like hyperactivity, anxiety and aggression in schoolage children.” —Amadu Bah, director of Plan International’s school feeding program in Moyamba

Fill Plates & Fuel Social Change With your support, the Sierra Leone school feeding program will help 301,397 children (especially girls) access food. But that’s not all. Female farmers provide food for the school meals, which earns them a steady income to support their families.

Your involvement will help: • Provide nutritious meals to students in 1,571 schools in seven districts • Deliver hygiene and food safety training for school cooks, kitchen helpers, community volunteers and school staff • Distribute plates, spoons and serving bowls for students and provide cooking utensils, ladles, face masks and gloves for school cooks • Disseminate gender awareness and child protection training using a Training of Trainers approach to reach a wide audience in the education system

The school feeding program will: • Improve the nutrition of school children • Contribute to improved focus, literacy and school attendance • Promote nutrition education and better eating habits amongst children and families • Foster local economies and empower women farmers • Encourage diversification by growing local crops
